A note on the knot garden

Lord Longstride with binoculars, Percival Hootington at a writing desk, and Sir Montgomery inspecting a gate above the knot garden.

The knot garden is not large, but it is particular. Paths turn back on themselves. Box holds its shape through weather that would defeat a less stubborn plant. From the upper landing, the design reads as a cipher; from the gravel, it is simply a place to walk without arriving too soon.

Sir Montgomery reports that the south-east corner continues to harbour a mysterious creak, which he has not yet attributed to wood, stone, or visitor. Percival Hootington has indexed the creak under ‘unresolved’.

Lord Longstride has asked whether the garden might host a small gathering when the first green appears. The Committee has neither refused nor agreed. The hedges, for their part, are not to be hurried.
